Day 41: Kayaking Off The Deep End

of a pool that is (and a very chlorine-rich pool at that, ick)...

Sure, it was kind of strange kayaking in an indoor recreational swimming facility, but it was actually more fun than I expected. You may be wondering, "have you lost it HaufeCoffee?!?!?"...

No, its actually part of my new afternoon activity: Whitewater Kayaking. Usually, we'd be out at the river right now, but considering its barely 40 degrees and there is STILL snow on the ground (not the fun powdery yay! snow, but the icky, icy, and black snow), we had to change our tactics. The guy who runs the program decided to call up the local recreational pool, and sure enough they had space for us at the deep end. So there we were, whitewater kayaking amidst screaming children and beach balls. I learned some neat tricks though...for instance, next time I flip over, I actually won't die, which is very useful when trying to maintain a teenage life.

So, as I sit here reeking of Chlorine, I'm gonna make my daily recommendation: "La La Lie" by Jack's Mannequin. It's another one of those generic sounding alternative songs, but for some strange reason its considerably catchy...its one of those songs that can stick in your head for hours, and it takes something as evil as Britney Spears or Katy Perry to get it out...

...of course that would only make it worse, lol. Anyways, take a listen and tell me what you think.

3 more days until spring break...shall I survive? The upcoming barrage of tests doesn't help my odds >.<.

Nothing happened today, but I did find a really interesting video on wimp that y'all might enjoy (especially The Word Nerd in light of her recent blog post). It's all about the Interwebs...

The Eels are a great band, don't get me wrong, but there's an even better one: The Wallflowers, and their 90's hit "One Headlight" is tonight's recommendation. Factoid of the Day: The lead singer of the Wallflowers is actually the son of well known musical artist Bob Dylan. Interesting, right? Kinda makes you want to listen to the song now, right? Of course it does... ;)

Monday night was chiller (I think thats a word...) than usual...in fact for the first time this year, I had absolutely no homework to do. Of course, what did that mean for me? More time to blog? On the contrary, more time to sit around and do absolutely nothing. It was glorious...

But now its Tuesday, and I've fallen back into the reality of schoolwork, which is great for you guys because it means more procrastination on my part in the form of blogging. I don't have anything interesting to share today though...check back in a few hours for the next entry and be prepared for something so shocking, so incredible, it may just MELT your eyeballs from where they stand!

Back in the early days of YDCoH (like Day 3ish), one of my first recommendations was the delightful song "Boston" by Augustana. Unfortunately, I failed to mention another great song of theirs that deserves its place on the blog: "Stars and Boulevards". Its got the same tempo as Boston, and a lot of the same sounds, yet somehow I get the sense that its just as different as it is similar to Boston. Why don't you take a listen to both and tell me what you think?

Day 37: Freezelvania Thawed...

I'm sure you're already complaining about my poor on-time blogging record, but after a 15 hour snowboarding trip starting at 6:30 in the morning, there was no way in hell I could update the blog with a coherent mind last night.

Overall, I had a great time at Whitetail Mountain (its more like a hill than a mountain, but I'm not complaining). We arrived at around 9 in the morning and hit the bunny slopes, not because I suck at snowboarding (snowboarding is one of the very few sports I don't suck at, haha), but because my sister and brother started snowboarding for the first time! Of course they fell every five feet and faceplanted every twenty, but all that aside I think they did very well for there first day...

..Unfortunately, by noon the mountain was packed. It got so bad that it took an hour just to do one run down part of the mountain. Of course, it also didn't help that the temperature raised by 10 degrees and the snow turned into sticky slush :/. Luckily, by about 5pm the crowds started to diminish and the temperature returned to a nice freezing temperature of 32 degrees. I was finally able to conquer the hardest parts of the mountain (well...intermediate parts, I'm not Shaun White) without worrying about running into tiny skiers inching their way down. Overall, it was a fantastic Saturday...a very looooong Saturday, but fantastic nonetheless.

So, a couple days ago I recommended a couple songs from the Goo-Goo Dolls and mentioned a couple others, one of them titled "Black Balloon". It's another 90's classic, and I love it...maybe even more so than "Name". Therefore, I wanted to make it an official recommendation, because its definitely a song that deserves the honor. You can listen to it here, but be wary of the music video...its rather abnormal...

Day 36: Shudder Island

HALLELUJAH! The week is finally over.....in all seriousness, good riddance...

I'm really excited for the weekend though. Apparently I'm going to a different mountain than last time. Its still in Pennsylvania, but a little bit further west near a place called Mercersburg. For some reason, that name sounds strangely familiar...but I can't quite place it. Do you guys have any idea why that town might be familiar? It sounds like it could have been the place of a battle, possibly civil war, but I'm not sure...

Anyways, I'm all packed and ready to go hit the slopes tomorrow...that is if I actually wake up to begin with. We're leaving at 7 in the morning, so I have to get up at 6:30...on a SATURDAY morning. This is madness...there's no other way to describe it...

Today was a good day. I mean, Friday's are usually the highlight of my week, but today was especially a good day. I got all the hard school stuff confidently out of the way, I got to go home to see the family, and I got to see a fantastic movie: Shutter Island.

It's a psychological thriller that takes place on an island in Boston Harbor that houses the criminally insane. Leonardo DiCaprio is the main character, and believe it or not I was impressed with his performance...DiCaprio has a way with portraying crazy middle-aged men, haha. It's suspenseful at points (hence the title), but its not particularly scary. There are some extremely disturbing images though, so don't expect unicorns pooping rainbows of delight. Personally, I thought it was a great movie, and I highly recommend it to all of those who enjoy the psychological thriller genre. If you're looking for action...you may want to look elsewhere....

Hey, I actually came across some new music today! Tonight, I've decided to recommend "So Contagious" by Acceptance. I'm sure you've never heard of the band (hell, I didn't know about them until 45 minutes ago), but considering they're another member of the alternative genre, you should give them a try. True, "So Contagious" isn't an AMAZING song...in fact it sounds a little generic to me...but I'm all out superb recommendations, so you guys get the next best thing: this song. Enjoy...or die (but not for real because A) that would be really tragic and B) no one would read my blog :/).

It's been a busy day, and I'm in for an even busier day tomorrow...

Day 35: I'm Not Crazy, I'm Just a Little Unwell...

Confused? Don't be, its just the chorus to the song "Unwell" by Matchbox Twenty...

...Wait...you've never heard of it!?!?! Have you been living in a rock/cave/alternate dimension all your life!? Sheesh, we need to do something about that. How about we start with this recommendation. Unwell has been my staple song for the past four years, if not longer. Yes, it's a weird song, but what does that matter? I'm weird too.....and proud of it actually (if you need proof just look at the past 34 days of blog entries). So, weirdness aside, its a kick-ass song, and you should take a moment to enjoy it.

Today was Thursday, and like all other Thursday's it wasn't much fun, so unfortunately I have very little to blog about today. However, tomorrow I'm taking a weekend trip to the good ol' southern Pennsylvanian Mountains for another round of snowboarding. Hopefully they aren't experiencing the weather we have in the Mid-Atlantic...otherwise I might be shredding in Un-Freezelvania, and that would be rather dismal :/

But of course, HaufeCoffee is an optimistic fellow, and like all other optimistic persons, HaufeCoffee will end his blog on a happy note. (Yes, HaufeCoffee is talking in the third person, because HaufeCoffee is amazing).

So, let's watch the asdfmovie.
